MILWAUKEE, Wis. — South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn came to Milwaukee, Wis., on Saturday to urge Democrats to turn out for gubernatorial candidate David Crowley in the final days before Tuesday’s midterm election.

The longtime congressman shared the stage with U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore and Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson at one of several get-out-the-vote events the local Democratic Party staged over the weekend. Crowley is the Milwaukee County executive, and Clyburn said he had followed his rise and was impressed by his leadership and temperament.

Clyburn, 86, told the crowd that Milwaukee was among his last stops of the campaign, with Michigan next on his schedule. He leaned on history to argue that every vote counts, pointing to the disputed 1876 presidential race that Rutherford B. Hayes won over Samuel J. Tilden by one electoral vote, 185 to 184, a result that ended Reconstruction.

He built his pitch around three themes he called affordability, accessibility and accountability, tying the civil rights struggle to the costs families face now for housing, health care and schooling. He also told the story of his late wife growing up on a farm and riding to college in a pickup truck, saying where a person starts in life should not limit where they can go.

Wisconsin is again drawing national attention this cycle, and Clyburn told supporters that individual participation can decide close races. He closed by asking them to spend the next three days helping bring a win home for Crowley.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Milwaukee voters can check their registration and find their polling place through the Milwaukee Election Commission before heading out.
