Milwaukee, Wisconsin — Boston Inc., a company based in Stevens Point, has successfully acquired Colder’s Furniture, Appliances and Mattresses in a deal valued at $8.75 million. This acquisition includes the Colder’s location situated on a 16-acre site at 9725 S. 13th St. in Oak Creek, Milwaukee, and positions Boston Inc. as the largest furniture and mattress retailer in Wisconsin.
The seller of the property was Brookfield-based Investment 9725 LLC. As a result of this acquisition, Boston Inc., known as Boston FAM, will now manage a total of 21 showrooms across Wisconsin following the integration of Colder’s four existing locations — Grafton, West Allis, and Delafield — although details regarding those specific transactions are currently unavailable.
The acquisition marks an important strategic move for Boston FAM, which is already recognized as the parent company of multiple Ashley HomeStore outlets and Furniture and ApplianceMart stores in the state. Following approximately a year of discussions with Colder’s management, the transition is set to bring on board about 131 employees from Colder’s.
Boston FAM plans to maintain the existing Colder’s brand while initiating a sale to clear out old inventory and roll out new products. Customers of Colder’s can expect to see changes primarily in product offerings, along with an enhanced overall shopping experience. The company is also set to improve salary offerings for Colder’s employees, providing opportunities for them to become part owners within the employee-owned company framework.
In addition to integrating the Colder’s locations, the company plans to hire approximately 30 new employees and will undertake substantial renovations to all four Colder’s stores. These remodels are intended to modernize the retail environment and improve customer engagement.
Colder’s Furniture has a rich history spanning 83 years in the Milwaukee area, dating back to its inception in 1942, when it was first established as a refrigeration service company. Over the decades, the company expanded its product lines, transitioning from merely selling refrigerators to encompassing washers, dryers, and a broad array of furniture and appliances.
The transition to new ownership comes with a commitment from Boston FAM to uphold the legacy of service that Colder’s has provided its customer base over the years. Colder’s management expressed gratitude to loyal customers for their support and their positive outlook regarding the future under Boston’s leadership.
To facilitate the rebranding and adjustments needed for the new ownership structure, Colder’s stores will temporarily close from September 10-12. During this time, efforts will be made to re-tag and prepare the stores for the updated inventory and branding strategies.
As Boston FAM integrates Colder’s into its operations, both companies aim to provide exceptional value to customers as well as expand employment opportunities, solidifying their footprint in the Metro Milwaukee market.
