Earlier in September, Ruth had experienced a fall, which required zookeepers to use a front-end loader to assist her. Unfortunately, on the morning of September 20, she was found down and unable to rise on her own. In response, zookeepers implemented standardized procedures for lifting a downed animal, which included contacting the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team for additional assistance.
Veterinary and animal care staff at the zoo, including the director of animal management and health, evaluated Ruth’s condition. After thorough consideration, it was determined that she would not be able to recover from her latest fall, leading to the decision to euthanize her. During the euthanasia process, Ruth was first given anesthesia, and caring zoo staff surrounded her for support. Zookeepers were afforded time to privately say their goodbyes, reflecting the close bonds formed with the animals in their care. Moreover, Ruth’s herd mates, Brittany and Belle, were allowed to interact with her in accordance with customary practices for socially bonded animals experiencing the loss of a companion.
Ruth’s life at the Milwaukee County Zoo was notable. She was recognized for her independent and spirited demeanor, often choosing her own space in the outdoor habitat. Ruth was also a highly engaged participant in training and research activities, contributing to a plasma collection program viewed as a final gift to help another elephant in need.
All three elephants at the zoo, which include Brittany and Belle, are considered geriatric, as they are in their 40s. The median life expectancy for a female African savanna elephant in human care is 39.4 years, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
A necropsy is scheduled to be conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, with results anticipated in several weeks.
