The facility, covering 49,000 square feet, is part of a broader trend with new hospitals underway, including an innovative rehabilitation center that aims to enhance patient care and recovery.
Milwaukee has witnessed a significant transaction in the healthcare sector as the Milwaukee Rehabilitation Hospital in Greenfield was sold for $35.3 million. The transaction was recently reported through state property records, marking a notable investment by a New York City-based firm.
The Milwaukee Rehabilitation Hospital, located at 3200 S. 103rd St., spans an impressive 49,000 square feet and was constructed in 2021. Developed by Texas-based New Era Cos., the facility is part of the company’s portfolio that includes various properties, ranging from hospitality to retail.
As the Milwaukee area experiences growth in rehabilitation services, The Sanders Trust has initiated construction on a new rehabilitation hospital in a different sector of Milwaukee. Collaborating with Lifepoint Rehabilitation, a division of Lifepoint Health, the new facility will cover 58,000 square feet and feature 40 beds located at 7840 South Highgate Avenue, Oak Creek, Wisconsin. The design emphasizes a therapeutic environment, incorporating advanced amenities, including:
- A brain injury unit
- Multidisciplinary therapy gymnasiums
- A specialized “activities of daily living” suite
- Outdoor courtyards to encourage patient movement and activity
This new rehabilitation hospital is anticipated to open in late 2024. The construction team comprises general contractor Brasfield & Gorrie and architect Earl Swensson Associates, Inc., aiming to provide innovative therapeutic options for patients.
In addition to this new hospital, discussions are underway for another 40-bed rehabilitation hospital proposed for 10950 W. Liberty Drive, situated in the Park Place business park on Milwaukee’s far northwest side. This facility, developed by WB Development Partners, would encompass around 50,000 square feet and cater to patients who require rehabilitation after a general hospital stay but are not ready to return home. Patients recovering from strokes typically stay for 12 to 14 days in rehabilitation hospitals.
However, the approval process for the proposed site has encountered delays. The Granville-Havenwoods Advisory Council is seeking further information and assessing potential alternatives, including a possibly more suitable site at the former Johnson’s Park amusement park located at 7350 N. 76th St.. This proposal must attain zoning approval from the city’s Common Council, which will also involve a thorough review by the Plan Commission.
The recent trends in Milwaukee’s rehabilitation services follow the establishment of similar facilities, such as the Milwaukee Rehabilitation Hospital that opened its doors in February 2022, and another hospital located in Oak Creek at 7869 S. 13th St.. These developments highlight an increasing focus on rehabilitation services within the region, catering to the healthcare needs of the community.
The sale of Milwaukee Rehabilitation Hospital and the forthcoming construction of new facilities underscore the evolving landscape of rehabilitation services in the Milwaukee area, reflecting the demand for specialized medical care designed to support patients in their recovery process.
