Merced – Local businesses in Merced are facing significant challenges due to ongoing construction in the Bob Hart Square area, a historic hub in the city. The disruption, which has lasted for several months, has made it increasingly difficult for customers to access these shops, resulting in substantial financial losses for business owners. Tany Vega, owner of Shop Barber Shop on Canal Street, reported that many customers are now forced to use back entrances due to inaccessible main entrances. This has severely impacted foot traffic and overall business revenue.

Despite efforts by business owners to keep their doors open during construction, losses have mounted into thousands of dollars. Vega expressed particular concern about the loss of existing clients, potential new clients, and barbers due to the construction disruptions. As the construction continues to disrupt daily operations, business owners are becoming increasingly frustrated, with some even contemplating legal action due to the financial difficulties they are facing.

The construction project, originally slated for completion in October, has now been delayed until early November, further exacerbating concerns among local entrepreneurs. Merced has experienced significant population growth of over 16% in the last five years, highlighting the urgent need for the revitalization efforts taking place in the downtown area.

Mayor Matthew Serratto emphasized that the revitalization work is critical to accommodating the increasing population and enhancing the city’s infrastructure. As part of the project, the city has been updating the area’s infrastructure and amenities, including the installation of a new 16-inch water line, a 12-inch storm drain system, two new driveways, updated crosswalks, and new seating planters. These improvements are part of a broader effort to enhance the downtown area and attract more visitors and businesses.

The city has attempted to communicate updates about the construction to local businesses, providing a letter to seven business owners regarding the status of the work. However, many business owners have expressed that the communication has not adequately addressed their concerns or provided reassurance amidst the ongoing construction disruptions.

In addition to the challenges posed by construction, exciting new developments are set to emerge in Merced. Several new businesses, including Chick-fil-A, Poki Bowl, and Sahara Coffee House, are expected to open soon. A Hilton Garden Inn and a Raising Cane’s restaurant are also in the works for the city. Furthermore, the Marketplace at Merced is preparing for new additions such as Boot Barn, Burlington, and Petco, which are anticipated to enhance the shopping options available to residents.

City officials have indicated that the Burlington Coat Factory is set to open on October 10, promising additional retail opportunities in the community. As the holiday season approaches, several other businesses within the Marketplace at Merced are expected to open in time for Christmas shopping, which is anticipated to boost overall economic activity in the area.

As Merced continues to grow and evolve, city leaders and local business owners are hopeful that the long-term benefits of the revitalization efforts will ultimately outweigh the current challenges posed by construction disruptions. With efforts underway to enhance infrastructure and prepare for new businesses, the community looks forward to what the future holds for its downtown area.
