News Summary

DPR Construction has launched a paid internship program for high school students, providing valuable experience in the construction industry. The Build Up program focuses on inclusivity, targeting low-income students and aiming to develop essential skills in diverse candidates. Many interns have successfully advanced to college internships and full-time roles within the company, transforming their future prospects.

San Francisco, California – DPR Construction’s Build Up High School Internship program is offering high school students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the construction industry. Launched in 2017, this program aims to provide accessibility and inclusivity within the construction sector while preparing young individuals for future career paths.

The Build Up program is structured as an eight-week, paid internship specifically designed for high school juniors and seniors. During this period, interns are involved in various aspects of the construction business, including project planning, technology utilization, and familiarization with different roles in construction management.

Since its inception, over 160 students have participated in the Build Up program, showcasing its impact and reach. In 2025, the initiative welcomed 31 interns, who not only work full-time but also earn competitive hourly wages. Remarkably, 22% of past participants have returned to DPR as college interns, and some have even secured full-time positions with the company.

The program is particularly aimed at students from families meeting the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s low-income standards. Approximately 75% of Build Up interns do not have any family history of college attendance, indicating that this program plays a crucial role in enabling first-generation college students to pursue higher education. Furthermore, nearly half of the interns are young women, addressing the existing gender disparity within the construction workforce.

During the internship, participants not only gain essential business skills, such as communication and time management but also receive technical training. They become familiar with industry-standard tools and technologies, including BIM 360, CMIC, HammerTech, and Primavera. Interns are also educated on jobsite safety procedures, which is indispensable in the field.

A notable feature of the program is the final presentation that interns must complete. This aspect enhances their public speaking and project management skills, preparing them for future professional scenarios. The exposure gained from managing multi-million-dollar projects sets the stage for a promising career in construction and related fields.

DPR Construction’s focus on diversity is further emphasized by the role of Diane Shelton, the Community Initiatives Leader. The Build Up program is not only aimed at developing individual skills but also contributes to a more diverse construction workforce, aligning with the company’s commitment to expanding opportunities within the communities where they operate.

One of the program’s success stories is Selome Muruts, who progressed from being a Build Up intern to a college intern and is now pursuing a degree in civil engineering. This trajectory highlights the program’s potential as a launchpad for students’ careers, fostering mentorship and the confidence needed for professional exploration in the construction industry.

Overall, DPR Construction is dedicated to expanding the Build Up program, prioritizing inclusion and educational opportunities. The initiative reflects a commitment to developing a skilled and confident future workforce, ensuring that students are equipped for success in their respective fields while positively impacting their communities.
