Two construction workers have lost their lives in separate highway accidents in the Twin Cities over the past 48 hours. Adam Frederick Smith was struck by a dump truck in a closed construction zone on Highway 610, while Pierre Raymon Mack was killed by a boom truck on Interstate 35W. These incidents underscore the risks faced by road workers and the need for improved safety measures, with authorities calling for greater vigilance from both drivers and workers in construction areas.

Maple Grove, Minnesota – Two construction workers have tragically lost their lives in separate accidents on highways within the Twin Cities over the last 48 hours. The recent fatalities underline the dangers faced by workers on the roads, particularly in active construction zones.

The latest incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Thursday on eastbound Highway 610, near the interchange with Interstate 94. Adam Frederick Smith, a 25-year-old contract worker hailing from Seymour, Wisconsin, was on foot in a closed construction zone when he was struck by a reversing dump truck. Emergency responders at the scene pronounced Smith dead.

The vehicle involved was driven by 57-year-old Dianand Sukhram of Port Charlotte, Florida. Sukhram was not injured in the collision. However, he has a documented history of driving violations, including infractions regarding inspection decals and driving without proof of insurance. The construction work taking place at the time was being executed by New Look Contracting, a company based in Rogers, Minnesota.

In the aftermath of the incident involving Smith, the eastbound lanes of Highway 610 between I-94 and Maple Grove Parkway were closed until approximately 6 p.m. to allow for an investigation and cleanup.

This tragic event followed another fatal accident just one day earlier. On Wednesday morning, Pierre Raymon Mack, a 29-year-old worker from St. Paul, was struck and killed while working in a construction zone on southbound Interstate 35W near Highway 13. Mack was hit by a truck equipped with a boom attachment while he was on foot, reportedly in a closed area away from passing traffic.

The driver of the truck involved in Mack’s accident was identified as 50-year-old Kerry Don Ingram from North Branch, Minnesota, who also did not sustain any injuries. Following this incident, another truck driver inadvertently struck a stopped Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) truck, resulting in a citation for hit-and-run and additional violations, although no injuries occurred in that incident.

These accidents highlight the ongoing risks that construction workers face on Minnesota highways. According to MnDOT, since 1960, a total of 36 workers and 16 contractors have lost their lives while working on the state’s highways. The agency is actively working to improve safety measures in construction zones and is urging both drivers and workers to remain vigilant to prevent further tragedies.

As investigations continue into these recent fatalities, local authorities emphasize the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations within construction zones. They also encourage the public to exercise caution when traveling through areas with ongoing road work to protect both workers and drivers alike.

The loss of Adam Frederick Smith and Pierre Raymon Mack serves as a somber reminder of the dangers present within construction zones. It brings renewed attention to the necessity of safety measures and awareness for those working and driving in these environments.
