The venue will cater to patrons 21 and older after 10 p.m. and feature a patio, humidor, and entertainment activities like live performances and gaming. Approval from the Milwaukee Common Council is required for official openings, marking a step towards revitalization in the area.
Milwaukee, WI – Diaspora Sports Bar and Lounge is set to open in the former Company Brewing space at 735 E Center St. in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, transforming the 10,350 square-foot venue into a full-service restaurant, cocktail lounge, and nightclub. The establishment, which will also feature an adjacent 400-square-foot patio, has submitted a permit application to the city for this redevelopment project.
The anticipated opening date for Diaspora is December 1, 2024; however, it is worth noting that there may be an error in this date, possibly indicating it could actually refer to December 1, 2025. The venue is designed to accommodate a wide range of entertainment activities, including DJs, karaoke, gaming machines, pool tables, as well as live performances from bands and comedians. Proposed operating hours for the establishment are Sunday to Thursday from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. After 10 p.m. daily, only patrons aged 21 and older will be permitted entry.
In addition to a diverse food and beverage menu, Diaspora will offer cigars and vapes, with the cigars stored in a humidor located on the first floor. The ownership team comprises six partners: Michael Johnson, Philyus Pullium, Brian Bradford, Marvin Bailey, Michael Shaw, and Roberthenry Davis. They have projected that sales for the venue will be distributed as follows: 35% from alcohol, 35% from food, 20% from entertainment, and 10% from tobacco and vaping products.
The property was previously occupied by Company Brewing, which closed in May 2024 after nine years of operation. The brewery filed for bankruptcy, citing assets between $100,000 and $500,000 against liabilities of approximately $1.95 million. Before Diaspora took interest, another potential tenant named Mother’s was also considered for the former Company Brewing space. Ultimately, that community-focused dining concept opted to move to Bay View due to challenges related to the space.
It is important to note that all license applications for Diaspora will need approval from the Milwaukee Common Council before the venue can officially open. The establishment is expected to fill a gap in the Riverwest neighborhood by providing a vibrant space for dining and entertainment.
The neighborhood, known for its rich culture and diverse community, will likely welcome the new addition as an opportunity for local engagement and nightlife. The owners of Diaspora aim to create a welcoming environment for all patrons while offering various entertainment options to suit different tastes and preferences.
With plans underway and an application submitted, the team at Diaspora is eager to jumpstart the revitalization of this prominent location in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, potentially drawing in both locals and visitors alike in the coming years.
