In a recent social media announcement, ICHC expressed gratitude to the community for its support, while acknowledging the unsustainability of continuing operations under the current financial circumstances. The center is now focused on preparing for closure, which includes not accepting book donations at its Emigration Library.

As part of its efforts to address its financial situation, ICHC is actively seeking to sell its building located at 2133 W. Wisconsin Avenue. The organization is exploring potential partnerships to aid in the sale of its property and other assets, with the aim of ensuring that the resources are managed thoughtfully to support future cultural or community initiatives.

ICHC’s financial woes have been significant, as reflected in its Form 990 tax filings. For the fiscal year 2024, the center reported a deficit of $6,970, with revenues amounting to $149,063, while expenses reached $156,033. Moreover, the center recorded a more substantial deficit of $70,371 in fiscal year 2023, the largest deficit since 2015. The center has operated at a loss for seven of the last ten years, highlighting a persistent trend of financial instability.

The building currently occupied by ICHC has a historical significance, originally built in 1887 as the Grand Avenue Congregational Church. In 1986, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and a decade later, in 1996, the church sold the property to ICHC for the nominal fee of one dollar.

Over the past ten years, ICHC has made concerted efforts with volunteers from the Irish community to restore the building and maintain its heritage. However, ongoing maintenance challenges, coupled with financial constraints, have hindered these efforts, leading to the decision to suspend operations.

The closure of ICHC signifies a substantial loss for the local community that has embraced the center as a vibrant venue for Irish cultural events, gatherings, and music performances.
