Lake Tahoe, CA – CalTrans has announced a series of lane closures and construction projects affecting the Lake Tahoe region over the coming week, primarily focusing on State Route 28 and the Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City. Motorists are advised to plan ahead as various projects will impact traffic flow and accessibility in the area.

Starting Sunday, August 24 through Thursday, August 28, construction work on SR 28 in Tahoe City will take place nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. This $31.7 million pavement rehabilitation project, contracted by Mercer Fraser Company of Eureka, will occur between Commons Beach Road and Grove Street, particularly affecting westbound traffic. The implementation of bi-directional traffic will allow for partial access, but no street parking will be permitted in the construction zone. However, access to cross streets and driveways will remain open. An additional work window is scheduled for Friday, August 29 from 7 a.m. until noon.

Utility work on SR 28 is also set for Monday, August 25 and Tuesday, August 26, operating from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. this time, focusing on the stretch between Star Harbor Court and Lake Forest Road (west). Motorists should expect short-term delays due to these activities.

The Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City will remain closed to all traffic until November 15, necessitating detours for motorists. Drivers are encouraged to use Lake Boulevard to access State Route 89 (SR 89) and SR 28 during this closure. Fortunately, West Lake Boulevard will stay open for business and transit center access while the bridge is out of service. Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from an uninterrupted path across the Truckee River Dam throughout the duration of the Fanny Bridge project.

On top of the ongoing work on SR 28, pile driving activities scheduled for Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24 may cause noise and vibrations, further impacting the nearby area. Residents and visitors should brace for these disturbances as part of the construction process.

Additionally, starting Monday, August 25 through Thursday, August 28, broadband utility work will take place on SR 28 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. This will span from the State Route 267 junction in Kings Beach to the Nevada state line, potentially complicating travel in that section as well. There will also be overnight utility work occurring from 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 24 to 7 a.m. on Monday, August 25 between Park Lane and Harbor Avenue in Brockway.

In the Homewood area of Placer County, utility work is scheduled from Monday, August 25 through Thursday, August 28, operating daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. This work will take place between South Street and Fern Street, leading to further local disruptions.

It is important for all motorists and residents in the Lake Tahoe region to remain abreast of the construction and utility work schedules, which may change based on weather conditions, available equipment, or unexpected events. CalTrans encourages everyone to stay informed and adjust their travel plans accordingly during this busy construction phase.
