Milwaukee – The Milwaukee Police Department has released dashcam footage from an incident that resulted in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Elijah Wilks by an off-duty officer on October 9. The video, which lasts less than 75 seconds, was recorded on the officer’s personal dash cam and became public on October 13, shortly after the family of Wilks was shown the footage.

The shooting took place along West Mill Road near North 47th Street as both parties were involved in a confrontation following a collision between their vehicles. The officer, who is 40 years old and has over 20 years of service, was on his way to work when the incident occurred. According to department policy, it is standard practice to show footage of police-involved shootings to victims’ families within 48 hours and to release it to the public within 15 days. However, due to misinformation circulating on social media and other surveillance footage being released, the department chose to expedite the public release.

In the dashcam footage, a confrontation occurs after the collision, during which Wilks exits his vehicle with his hand in his jacket pocket, appearing to confront the officer about the crash. At a certain point, Wilks pulls out a gun, strikes the officer in the face with it, and subsequently points the weapon towards him. The officer then fires several shots in response to Wilks’ threat. After the initial gunfire, Wilks retreated to the front of his vehicle but briefly re-emerged before the officer fired a second time. Ultimately, Wilks died from his injuries at the scene.

The Wilks family, through their attorney, has stated that they consider the shooting justified after watching the footage. They expressed their heartbreak over the loss while also acknowledging that Wilks’ actions were reckless. On the day of the incident, it was reported that Wilks was on his way to his uncle’s funeral and was behaving unusually.

The release of the video aimed to quell the spread of misinformation and promote transparency regarding the incident. The investigation into the shooting is being led by the West Allis Police Department. Although initial police reports indicated there may have been an exchange of gunfire between Wilks and the officer, it remains unclear whether this was the case based on the currently available evidence.

Following the press conference discussing the incident, the Wilks family took the opportunity to honor his memory by releasing balloons. The officer involved in the shooting is currently on administrative duty, which is standard protocol for such incidents in law enforcement. The Milwaukee community continues to process the implications of this tragic event as it explores issues of police conduct and public safety.

This incident has raised questions about the interplay between law enforcement actions and community trust. As more information becomes available through ongoing investigations, stakeholders including community leaders, law enforcement, and the public will be watching closely to ensure accountability and foster dialogue about future prevention measures.
