Milwaukee celebrates the grand opening of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s Associated Bank Theater Center, which features modern renovations and three fully accessible theaters. The facility reinforces the Rep’s commitment to community engagement, education, and the performing arts. With significant upgrades made to enhance accessibility and audience experience, this cultural landmark is set to enrich Milwaukee’s artistic landscape and engage over 20,000 students annually through dedicated programs.

Milwaukee is witnessing a significant milestone in its cultural landscape with the grand opening of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s new Associated Bank Theater Center on October 11. The opening coincides with a concert by acclaimed Broadway star Bernadette Peters, marking a new era for the Rep and the community.

The newly renovated theater center, located at 108 E. Wells St., features a modernized and expanded space of 152,500 square feet. This facility is a result of extensive renovations to the existing building that has been home to the Milwaukee Repertory Theater since 1987, originally constructed as the Oneida Street Power Station in 1900.

This renovation includes a newly constructed glass building that connects all three theaters in the complex to a multi-level lobby, enhancing accessibility and patron experience. The center features three fully accessible state-of-the-art theaters: the Ellen & Joe Checota Powerhouse Theater, the Stackner Cabaret, and the Herro-Franke Studio Theater, the latter set to open in February 2026.

The Powerhouse Theater has undergone significant upgrades, including a wider and taller stage opening, accessible seating in the front row, and improved sight lines with wider and taller seats. These enhancements also include a new fly system and a reconfigured seating arrangement that prioritizes better viewing experiences, resulting in a reduction of total seats.

In addition to the theaters, the renovated center includes a dedicated education and engagement center with the potential to serve over 20,000 students annually, reinforcing the Rep’s commitment to community outreach and education. The construction project required 240,000 work hours and spanned seven years of planning, officially commencing with a groundbreaking in February 2024.

Accessibility has been a key focus of the renovation, featuring an easier entrance route for wheelchair users and additional accessible restrooms throughout the facility. For the first time, all three theaters will be interconnected through a single, spacious lobby, allowing for improved navigation for patrons.

The complex also boasts multiple gathering spaces, which include a donor lounge, concession areas, and a bar serving wine on tap. This integration is designed to create a welcoming environment for audiences before and after performances.

Furthermore, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater aims to enhance community engagement through new programs, particularly those targeting youth via its School of Theater initiative. These efforts are designed to deepen the connection between the theater and the community, fostering a love for the performing arts.

The Associated Bank Theater Center is poised to become a significant cultural asset for Milwaukee, enriching the city’s performing arts scene. Upcoming productions at the center will encompass a diverse range of genres, including musicals and classic plays, further solidifying the Rep’s role as a leader in the arts.

Despite facing challenges, including damages from severe flooding in August that impacted the Rep’s Wauwatosa production facility, the grand opening signifies a new chapter for this well-regarded institution. With its innovative design and renewed focus on accessibility and community engagement, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s transformation is set to leave a lasting impression on the city.
