Alongside this, Fairlawn Road will undergo separate improvements starting soon, impacting traffic flow. Community support is vital as the city aims to improve overall infrastructure for residents and visitors.

Topeka, Kansas – Major construction is set to begin on SE 6th Ave this October 2025 aimed at addressing key infrastructure issues along the road. The enhancements are designed to improve safety and accessibility for the heavy truck traffic that utilizes this route due to its proximity to several local industries.

This long-awaited project will involve comprehensive repairs, including pavement and concrete work, curb and gutter replacements, and upgrades to the bridge over Deer Creek. The current pavement on SE 6th Ave has been in place for approximately 35 to 40 years and shows significant signs of deterioration, prompting the need for these upgrades.

During the construction period, SE 6th Ave will remain open to traffic; however, motorists should anticipate delays and potential lane closures as the work progresses. The City of Topeka’s public works director has indicated that the goal of the project is to create a smoother and more durable roadway that will benefit the community in the long run.

In addition to the work on SE 6th Ave, Topeka will also be managing a separate construction initiative on Fairlawn Road, which has been delayed and is now scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025. This project will close Fairlawn Road between S.W. 22nd Park and S.W. 25th Street for improvements to storm sewers, sanitary sewers, waterlines, and the roadway itself.

Fairlawn Road is expected to temporarily reopen to through traffic starting August 20, 2025, but will close again on August 25, 2025. The renovations on this road are projected to last until at least October 23, 2026. Furthermore, for the duration of the Fairlawn Road project, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between S.W. Shunga Creek and S.W. 25th Street for pavement repairs, a change expected to continue until December 19, 2025.

While the SE 6th Ave project is crucial for improving traffic conditions and supporting local industries, the city’s team emphasizes the importance of community support and effective allocation of tax dollars to ensure successful road repairs. These projects reflect a broader effort by the City of Topeka to enhance infrastructure across the city, benefiting all residents and visitors.

As the construction on SE 6th Ave and Fairlawn Road progresses, residents are encouraged to stay informed about traffic changes and project updates to minimize inconvenience caused by the ongoing work.
