Tiny home community in Milwaukee dedicated to veterans

News Summary

Milwaukee has started construction on its first tiny home community exclusively for homeless military veterans. Spearheaded by the Veterans Community Project, the initiative features 40 tiny homes and aims to address veteran homelessness by providing not just shelter but also essential support services. The $11.7 million project, funded in part by state resources, emphasizes community participation and aims to rebuild connections among veterans. The community is set to offer personalized living spaces and a center for events and support, representing a significant step towards long-term housing solutions for veterans.

Milwaukee has officially commenced construction on the city’s first tiny home community dedicated to military veterans experiencing homelessness. This groundbreaking event marks a significant step towards addressing veteran homelessness in the region and is spearheaded by Veterans Community Project (VCP), a nonprofit organization based in Kansas City.

The project, located on a 7-acre site at 6767 N. 60th St., will feature 40 tiny homes, catering specifically to the needs of veterans. Bryan Meyer, the co-founder and CEO of VCP, pointed out the critical importance of taking initiative to confront the challenges faced by veterans struggling with homelessness. The community aims to provide not just shelter but also essential supportive services to help residents transition into permanent housing.

The total cost of the project is approximately $11.7 million, with funding support including $2.5 million secured through state resources, facilitated by state Senator Patrick Testin. Notable attendees at the groundbreaking ceremony included Governor Tony Evers, who emphasized the value of restoring dignity and stability to veterans through this initiative. He reiterated that the tiny homes would significantly contribute to rebuilding a sense of community among veterans.

The tiny homes will each be around 240 square feet, with some larger units available, measuring up to 340 square feet, designed to accommodate families. Each unit’s interior will be personalized to honor the respective veteran’s military service. Additionally, to enhance community engagement and support, a community center will be built on-site, providing a venue for meetings, events, and administrative functions.

VCP has a successful track record, having achieved an 85% success rate in helping veterans transition from homelessness to permanent housing typically within a span of 12 to 18 months. The initiative aligns with Wisconsin’s broader commitment to tackling veteran homelessness, as it is estimated that more than 300 veterans in the state currently face homelessness.

In an effort to bring the initiative to fruition, VCP has secured backing from several corporate partners including Milwaukee Tool, Milwaukee Brewers, and U.S. Bank, among others, underscoring the shared commitment to supporting veterans and addressing homelessness in the local community. Milwaukee Tool’s involvement is particularly driven by the company’s goal to assist both veterans and the wider community.

Moreover, the project aims to foster connections between residents and local services, encompassing not only housing solutions but also critical resources such as health care and job placement services. By providing comprehensive support, VCP intends to facilitate a smoother transition for veterans seeking permanent housing solutions.

Community participation is emphasized throughout the construction process, with expectations that local residents will contribute significantly to the work involved in building the tiny home community.

This initiative stands as a model not only for Milwaukee but potentially for addressing veteran homelessness across the state, presenting a replicable approach to resolving critical issues faced by veterans and their families. As the project moves forward, it promises to be a transformative step towards creating sustainable housing solutions and fostering a supportive community for those who have served in the military.
